A Healthy Weaning Recipe for Babies - Pumpkin Purée

Looking for a simple and nourishing first food for your baby? Pumpkin purée is naturally sweet, packed with vitamins, and gentle on tiny tummies, making it an excellent choice for the early stages of weaning.

What You’ll Need

  • 1 small pumpkin

How to Make Pumpkin Purée

1. Prepare the pumpkin

Wash, peel, and remove the seeds. Cut the pumpkin into small chunks, around 1–2 cm in size.

2. Cook until tender

Steam or boil the pumpkin pieces for 15–20 minutes, until soft enough to mash easily with a fork.

3. Blend or mash

Blend the cooked pumpkin until smooth, or mash with a fork for a chunkier texture if your baby is further along in weaning.

Tip: To adjust the consistency, add a little of your baby’s usual milk to thin it, or stir in infant cereal or rice to thicken it.

Is Pumpkin Safe for Babies?

Pumpkin is widely considered a safe and nutritious first food for most babies from around six months of age. Its soft texture, once cooked and blended, makes it easy for little ones to swallow, while its mild, naturally sweet flavour is often well-received by babies who are trying solid foods for the first time.

Nutritionally, pumpkin offers a valuable range of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin A supports healthy vision and immune function, vitamin C helps strengthen the immune system, potassium contributes to muscle development, and fibre aids healthy digestion. Introducing pumpkin early on can help broaden your baby’s palate and encourage them to accept a variety of vegetables as they grow.

Can Pumpkin Cause Gas in Babies?

Pumpkin is generally gentle on babies’ digestive systems, thanks to its high water and fibre content. These qualities can actually help regulate digestion and reduce the chances of constipation, making it a soothing option for many little ones. Some parents even find that pumpkin works as a natural way to support regular bowel movements.

That said, every baby reacts differently when starting solids. A small number of babies may experience temporary changes such as wind or looser stools as their digestive system adapts. This is normal when introducing new foods. To minimise discomfort, start with a small portion of pumpkin purée, offer it on its own at first, and watch how your baby responds before increasing the amount or combining it with other foods.

Enjoy exploring new flavours with your little one, and good luck on your weaning journey!
